I am a registered patent attorney and a founding partner at Buchanan Nipper. I’m passionate about helping innovators build business value around their intellectual assets. I think inventors are rock stars that should be viewed as role models for our children, ahead of athletes.
I work with individual inventors, start-up and early stage entities, as well as established businesses that apply a strategic approach to their intellectual property portfolio efforts.
I rarely wear a suit and tie and am most comfortable in jeans and khakis. I have an Office Manager, not a secretary. She manages my office; she doesn’t screen my calls. I’ve worked in high rise buildings overlooking Chicago and Washington, D.C., but prefer my 2nd floor office that overlooks Fifth Third Field in the Warehouse District of my hometown, Toledo, OH.
I rethought all traditional workflows when I started the firm. I kept a few that worked but dropped many others that just didn’t make sense. I set out to create a law firm culture that celebrates the inventor and that embraces efficiency and practicality. I feel successful in this regard, but continue to seek improvements every day. We can always do better.
I’ve been writing and prosecuting patent applications for more than fifteen years. I've developed an approach to the process that enables multiple professionals in our firm to efficiently collaborate on every application. This collaborative drafting model allows us to deliver sophisticated legal strategy at a cost that often surprises our clients.
On the personal side, I love baseball (Go Tribe!) and hockey (Let's go Red Wings!). My favorite author is Stephen King (ironically, his non-fiction On Writing is one of my favorite books). St. Pete Beach Florida is one of my favorite places in the world. I’m a Mac. Photography is a hobby and a creative outlet. I have two sons (both of whom are inventors) and two golden retrievers. My wife is my closest friend. I’m pretty sure I’m addicted to ice cream.
